Taoyuan Museum of Fine Arts | Hengshan Calligraphy Art Center organizes the Hengshan Calligraphy Award to connect diverse cultural traditions, media, and technologies; to expand the multiple dimensions and issues of calligraphic art; and to build an Asian platform for calligraphic art. The Award encourages curatorial projects and artistic presentations in calligraphic art that demonstrate originality and contemporary relevance.

1. Applicants of all nationalities are eligible. Both individuals and groups may apply.
2. Applicants must be at least 18 years old. Applicants under the age of 18 must obtain written consent from their legal guardian.
3. The term “group” refers to a combination of two or more persons who share the intent to apply together. A group is not required to have legal-person status. If applying in the name of an unincorporated group, the group must designate one representative. All members of the group must jointly issue a letter of authorization to the representative, authorizing the representative to exercise the relevant rights and obligations related to this Award.

The following applications will not be accepted:

1. Joint exhibitions, graduation exhibitions, course-result exhibitions, or exhibitions organized by government agencies or schools, or exhibitions that are, by their nature, part of the routine operations of government agencies or schools.
2. Proposals whose content, including the curatorial statement and the combination or presentation format of more than half of the participating works, has previously been publicly exhibited in the same or substantially the same form. However, this restriction does not apply where individual works have previously been publicly presented but are newly integrated and presented through a new curatorial statement.

1. Applicant and Participant Information: Applicants must provide information on the applicant and all participating persons.

2. Exhibition or Artistic Presentation Proposal
The proposal must include the following materials:
(1)    The curator’s or applicant representative’s professional background, including past exhibition experience, awards, professional background, and other relevant information.
(2)    Curatorial statement: approximately 1,000 words in English. If an optional-language version is submitted, approximately 2,000 characters may be provided as a guideline.
(3)    Reference list of exhibition works and clear image files of the works.
(4)    Exhibition-space design drawings.
(5)    Planning for educational and public programs.
(6)    Budget and itemized details.
(7)    Work schedule.
(8)    Consent forms, undertakings, and personal data statements from participating artists and lenders.
(9)    The formats for the consent forms, undertakings, and personal data statements mentioned in the preceding item will be provided by the Organizer as standard forms and announced on the Hengshan Awards official website. Applicants must use the standard forms provided by the Organizer and may not alter them.

3. Notes on Application
(1)    This Award accepts online applications only. Applications must be submitted through the Hengshan Awards official website. Paper applications will not be accepted.
(2)    Application materials must be completed in accordance with the relevant rules or instructions of the Organizer and the Hengshan Awards official website.
(3)    The proposal must be uploaded in both Word and PDF formats. Each file must not exceed 10 MB.
(4)    Consent forms, undertakings, and personal data statements must be combined into a single PDF file for upload. The file must not exceed 10 MB.
(5)    At the time of application, applicants must have obtained written consent forms from all participating artists and lenders. If the large number of artists makes this genuinely difficult to execute, applicants must obtain written consent from at least three-fourths of the participating artists and lenders, and must also provide a scheduled alternative plan and an explanation of its compatibility with the original proposal.
(6)    If the submitted proposal is jointly produced by multiple creators, the applicant must obtain written consent from all co-creators. In the event of violation, the applicant shall bear full responsibility and shall compensate the Organizer for all damages incurred as a result, including attorney’s fees, settlement payments, and litigation costs.
(7)    Group applicants must provide a detailed list of all group members and designate one representative to exercise the relevant rights and obligations related to this Award.

Application Period

From 10:00 a.m. on September 1, 2026 to 5:00 p.m. on November 30, 2026 (Taiwan Time).

Announcement of Finalists

March 2027, tentative

The finalist list will be announced on the Hengshan Awards official website and the Taoyuan Museum of Fine Arts official website.

Finalists will be notified by email.

Applicants who are not selected as finalists will not be notified separately.
 

Final Review Presentation

May 2027, tentative

Finalists are expected to give in-person presentations in principle. Finalists based outside Taiwan may give online presentations instead.
 

Announcement of Winner

June 2027, tentative

The winner will be announced on the Hengshan Awards official website and the Taoyuan Museum of Fine Arts official website, and will be notified by email or in writing.
 

Presentation of the Winner’s New Exhibition

To be separately determined by agreement between the Organizer and the winner.    

Note:

If there are any changes to the above schedule, the Organizer’s notification shall prevail. In the event of any change, the Organizer shall announce the new schedule on the Hengshan Awards official website no later than 30 days before the originally scheduled date.
 

The review process consists of three stages: eligibility review, preliminary review, and final review.
 

1. Eligibility Review
The Organizer will review the submitted application materials.
 

2. Preliminary Review
The Organizer will invite experts and scholars to form a preliminary review committee. The committee will review the application materials and determine the finalist list. For shortlisted proposals, the Organizer may separately notify applicants by email to provide relevant proposal materials and prepare a proposal presentation for reference during the final review.
 

3. Final Review
The Organizer will invite experts and scholars to form a final review committee. The committee will conduct the final review of the finalist list and hold a final review meeting.
Each finalist applicant must send no more than two representatives to attend the final review meeting and present the proposal in detail. All supporting materials, including the curatorial concept, spatial planning and design, research reports, and other relevant materials, must be presented by the representatives of the finalist applicant during the meeting.
The time and venue of the final review meeting will be determined by the Organizer. Representatives of finalist applicants must attend as required. Presentations shall be conducted in person in principle; representatives of finalists based outside Taiwan may give online presentations instead. Applicants who fail to attend without justification will be deemed to have withdrawn from the competition.
After evaluating the finalist materials and presentations, the final review committee will determine the winner.
 

4. No Award
If the finalist proposals do not meet the standards determined by the final review committee, the Award may remain vacant.

1.    One winning proposal will be selected. The Organizer will give priority to commissioning the winner to present a new exhibition at Hengshan Calligraphy Art Center within three years. The exhibition budget approved and paid by the Organizer shall be capped at NT$2,000,000, tax included. After the commissioning contract is signed, the winner will receive a cash award of NT$300,000 and one certificate.

If the winner fails to complete the signing of the contract within three months from the date on which the Organizer notifies and invites the winner to accept the commission, the Organizer may decline to proceed with the commission, and the winner may not claim damages on this basis. The amount of exhibition funding will be paid according to the approved annual budget and actual expenses. If the budget is not approved or is reduced, the Organizer may adjust or cancel the commission, and the winner may not claim damages on this basis.

2.    No more than five finalist proposals will be selected. Each finalist will receive a cash award of NT$30,000 and one certificate.

1.    The submitted works, exhibition proposals, artistic presentations, and related content must not involve plagiarism, misappropriation, or any violation of copyright, trademark rights, or other intellectual property laws or regulations.
If a third party claims that the above content infringes upon their rights, the Organizer may notify the applicant to submit an explanation within a specified period. If the applicant fails to submit an explanation within the specified period, or if the explanation is insufficient to clarify the issue, the Organizer may suspend the exercise of the applicant’s rights, revoke the applicant’s application, finalist, or winner status, and recover any cash awards and funding already paid.
If the application content causes damage to the rights of a third party, the applicant shall bear all legal responsibility. If any third party makes any claim or initiates litigation against the Organizer, the applicant shall unconditionally assume responsibility for handling the matter and shall compensate the Organizer for all damages incurred as a result, including but not limited to attorney’s fees, settlement payments, litigation costs, and reputational damage.
If the words or actions of an applicant or participant damage the reputation or rights and interests of the Organizer, the Organizer may pursue legal liability and may revoke the applicant’s application, finalist, or winner status, and recover any cash awards and funding already paid.

2.    The submitted works, curatorial statements, images of works, exhibition-space design drawings, and other creative content must not be generated, in whole or in substantial part, by generative artificial intelligence, including but not limited to large language models, image-generation models, and text-to-image models.
If an applicant uses generative artificial intelligence as an auxiliary tool during the creative or planning process, the applicant must provide a written disclosure at the time of application, specifically stating the scope of use, the name of the tool, the purpose of use, and the proportion of its use in the final result. In the event of violation of the above prohibition or false disclosure, the Organizer may handle the matter in accordance with the preceding paragraph.

3.    Applicants must warrant that the information provided is complete, accurate, and valid. If incomplete, incorrect, or invalid information affects the review results, the Organizer shall bear no responsibility.
If the above information is later found to be false or inaccurate, the Organizer may revoke the applicant’s finalist or winner status and recover any cash awards and funding already paid. In serious cases, the Organizer may prohibit the applicant from applying for the Award for the following three editions.

4.    The exhibition dates, the amount of exhibition funding to be paid by the Organizer, and other production details for the new exhibition shall be separately determined by agreement between the Organizer and the winner in a contract. If the exhibition funding paid by the Organizer is insufficient, the winner shall bear any additional expenses.

5.    Within three months from the date on which the Organizer notifies and invites the winner to accept the commission, the winner’s representative must sign a commissioning contract with the Organizer based on the winning proposal. The terms of the contract shall be handled in accordance with Taiwan’s Government Procurement Act, regulations governing government-agency procurement of arts and cultural services, and other relevant laws and regulations. The winner shall also bear relevant taxes in accordance with applicable tax laws.
If the winner is unable to present the exhibition as scheduled for any reason, the winner’s representative must notify the Organizer in writing within three months from the date on which the Organizer notifies and invites the winner to accept the commission. If the winner fails to comply with the above deadline, the Organizer may cancel the winner’s exhibition qualification, recover related expenses already paid, and prohibit the winner from participating in the Award for the following three editions.

6.    The winner’s cash award will be granted by the Organizer after the commissioning contract for the exhibition is signed.

7.    If the winner is unable to present the new exhibition after being invited and commissioned by the Organizer, the Organizer will invite and commission a finalist as a substitute to present a new exhibition for the Hengshan Calligraphy Award.

8.    Any revisions to the final presentation of the commissioned exhibition or artistic presentation must not result in major changes to the curatorial concept, the configuration of core works, or the exhibition structure. If any major change is involved, it may be made only with the prior written consent of the Organizer. The Organizer shall determine whether a change constitutes a major change.

9.    The person or group commissioned by the Organizer to present the new exhibition must participate in promotional activities related to this Award.

10.    If the representative of the person or group commissioned by the Organizer to present the new exhibition is residing outside Taiwan, the Organizer will subsidize round-trip airfare for one person during the exhibition installation period and for one person during the opening period.
The subsidy shall be capped at the cost of round-trip economy-class airfare and shall be based on the actual amount approved by the Organizer. The method of ticket purchase, reimbursement procedures, and required documents, including boarding passes and original receipts, shall be handled in accordance with the relevant rules of the Organizer. Details will be set forth in the commissioning contract for the exhibition.

11.    By applying, applicants shall be deemed to acknowledge the relevant rights and obligations set forth in these Guidelines, and to agree that the interpretation, revision, and supplementation of these Guidelines and related rules shall apply equally to all applicants.
If any matter is not covered in these Guidelines, the Organizer has the right to revise or supplement the Guidelines, and such revisions or supplements will be announced on the Hengshan Awards official website or specified in the contract. Revisions or supplements shall take effect from the date of announcement. If applicants have any questions regarding the provisions of these Guidelines, they must make written inquiries to the Organizer before applying. After application, applicants may not claim that any provision is invalid on the grounds of unclear interpretation.

12.    Copyright and authorization of application content:
(1)    The applicant warrants that the applicant owns the full copyright to the submitted application materials or has obtained lawful authorization.
(2)    The applicant agrees that, for the purposes of application processing, review, announcement of winners, and subsequent promotional activities, the Organizer may use the application materials free of charge and without separate compensation, on a non-exclusive basis, through reproduction, public transmission, public display, editing, and adaptation, on the platforms of Taoyuan Museum of Fine Arts, Hengshan Calligraphy Art Center, media partners of the Organizer, and online platforms.
(3)    Copyright and related rights to the documentation of the winning exhibition, including photographs, videos, and interviews, shall belong to the Organizer.
(4)    The above authorization does not affect the applicant’s full copyright in the applicant’s original works.

13.    Personal data protection:
The Organizer will use the personal data provided by applicants in accordance with the Personal Data Protection Act, within the scope of application processing, review, award presentation, performance of the commissioning contract, tax filing, and related operations for this Award.
Applicants may exercise their rights to inquire, correct, delete, and otherwise manage their personal data in accordance with Article 3 of the Personal Data Protection Act. Personal data will be retained for ten years after the announcement of the winner. After the retention period expires, the Organizer shall destroy the personal data, unless otherwise provided by law.

14.    Dispute resolution and governing law:
Any dispute arising from this Award or from any related contract shall first be resolved through consultation between the parties. If consultation fails, the parties agree that the Taiwan Taoyuan District Court shall be the court of first instance. The interpretation of these Guidelines and related contracts, and any disputes arising from them, shall be governed by the laws of the Republic of China (Taiwan).
