1.Objective
The Taoyuan Museum of Fine Arts (TMoFA) proudly announces the Third Hengshan Calligraphy Research Award. The Award aims to foster dialogue and development within the field of calligraphy. Its primary objectives are to identify and nurture talented researchers dedicated to contemporary calligraphy studies, emphasizing the interplay between local and global perspectives, tradition and innovation, as well as theory and practice.
2.Organizers

3.Eligibility
The submission process for the Award includes both nominations and open applications respectively. The nominations are made by a panel of experts and scholars invited by the Organizer, while open applications are available to individuals of any age, nationality, or residence.
4.Submission Requirements:
(1)The submitted papers must focus on topics related to calligraphy art.
(2)Papers should be primarily written in Chinese; submissions in English and Japanese are also accepted for this time. Papers written or published from 2021 to the submission deadline are accepted.
(3)The word count for Chinese papers is 8,000 to 20,000 characters (excluding notes and charts), for English papers 7,000 to 15,000 words, and for Japanese papers 11,000 to 28,000 characters. The paper should include an abstract of no more than 500 words and up to 7 keywords.
(4)To ensure fairness, the submitted paper should not contain the author’s name or any identifying marks.
(5)Submissions must follow the MLA style.
(6)If the paper has been published, relevant authorization documents for the Award publication from the original publication entity must be provided.
5.Restrictions
(1)Papers that have previously won the Hengshan Awards are not eligible.
(2)Papers submitted for open application cannot be the same as those nominated.
6.Submission Process
All submissions must be done online via the Hengshan Award Website。
7.Submission Period:
(1)Submission Period: From 10:00 AM Taiwan time on December 2, 2024, to 5:00 PM April 30, 2025.
(2)Announcement of Results: Tentatively in August 2025.
(3)Award Ceremony and Presentation Forum: Date and location to be announced.
8.Reviewing Process
(1)A panel of reviewers invited by the Organizer will conduct anonymous reviews of the submitted papers.
(2)The process includes initial and final reviews.
(3)If the shortlisted papers do not meet the reviewers’ standards, awards may be withheld.
9.Awards and Prizes
(1)Hengshan Research Award: One winner with NT$150,000, and a certificate; Outstanding Prize: Two to three winners, each receiving NT$30,000 and a certificate; Selected Papers: Certificates of participation.
(2)Winning papers will be published, and an award ceremony will be held.
(3)Travel subsidies are available for the awardees in Taiwan (high-speed rail or train fare) and a single round-trip airfare up to NT$50,000 for the awardees out of Taiwan.
10.Authorization and Publication
(1)The moral rights and property rights of Copyright of the winning papers shall remain with their original owners. By submitting their papers, submitters are deem to agree to authorize the Organizer to compile and publish their papers in digital format (e-book) and make them available for free online download for non-commercial use and educational promotion if their papers are awarded. Additionally, awardees shall grant the Organizer the right to use or reauthorize the use of their papers in any reasonable manner, in any territory for non-commercial promotional purposes for a period of five years following the announcement of the awardees.
(2)To maintain publication quality, if the selected paper contains images, the winner must provide images that have authorized usage rights and meet a certain resolution standard for the Organizers to edit and publish.
(3)The awarded papers to be published by the Organizer should be proofread by their authors, who will be fully responsible for the papers.
(4)Without affecting the substantive content of the winning papers, the Organizer may compile the written comments from the reviewers and request the author to make additions or revisions if they deem it necessary.
(5)For the purposes mentioned above, the Organizer reserves the right to digitize, reproduce, or use the awarded papers for other academic and educational purposes within the scope of the aforementioned authorization. These papers may be included in a database in digital form or made publicly available for browsing by the public through the Internet or other means. Unless there is a situation where the prize money is not paid as stipulated, the author cannot revoke the aforementioned authorization.
(6)If the copyright of the content of the winning paper (including but not limited to images and text within the paper) does not belong to the submitter and does not fall under fair use, the submitter must provide proof that they have obtained the copyright holder’s consent to authorize the Organizer for the aforementioned uses no later than one month after being shortlisted. If the submitter is unable to obtain the relevant authorization, the Organizer has the right to decide whether to cancel the publication and award qualification, retrieve the prize money, and select a replacement work in another reasonable manner.
(7)The consideration for the relevant authorization is already included in the prize money stipulated in Article 9 of this regulation. The Organizer does not need to pay any additional fees for the aforementioned uses.
11.Notices
(1)The submitter guarantees that their submitted papers are original works completed independently and do not infringe upon or plagiarize any third party’s copyright or other intellectual property rights. The submitter further confirms that they have the authority to submit the work in accordance with these regulations and to authorize the Organizer to use the works as specified upon winning. Otherwise, the submitter shall bear all responsibilities. Should the winning paper become involved in copyright or other legal disputes and be definitively ruled against by the reviewers or through legal proceedings, the Organizer reserves the right to cancel the award and reclaim the certificate and prize money. Additionally, if the submitter’s actions or statements damage the reputation of the Organizer, the Organizer may hold them legally accountable.
(2)The prize money for the awardees is subject to income tax. For those with Republic of China (Taiwan) nationality, 10% of the total payment will be withheld in accordance with the law. For those without Republic of China nationality, 20% of the total payment will be withheld. Any other individual cases will be handled in accordance with the relevant provisions of the tax laws of the Republic of China (Taiwan).
(3)Awardees must cooperate with the Organizer in participating in public presentations and related promotional activities.
(4)For the purposes of relevant administrative procedures, submitters must agree to provide the Organizer with personal information, including the following items: name, gender, date of birth, phone number, email, resume, and ID number. During the period of the award, the Organizer may collect and use the personal information provided by the submitters.
(5)For any matters not covered in these regulations, amendments and supplements may be made at any time by the Organizer. The Organizer reserves the right to modify, change, or cancel these regulations and to issue additional announcements regarding relevant execution details. The most recent announcement shall prevail. Submitters are deemed to have agreed to these regulations and have thoroughly read all the provisions upon participation.
